‘Thor 2’ Director Not Set Yet, Says Tom Hiddleston

The last time we checked in on “Thor 2,” it seemed as though Marvel had found its Kenneth Branagh successor in “Game Of Thrones” director Brian Kirk. As intriguing as that prospect is, it might not be the case. Yet.

When MTV News caught up with “Thor” and “Avengers” star Tom Hiddlestonyesterday to talk about the “Thor” Blu-ray release (out September 13), I asked if he’d had any interaction with Kirk, and he revealed that the “Thor 2” director’s chair has not officially been filled.

“I haven’t. I also don’t know that that’s actually confirmed,” he said. “That’s not me being coy. I spoke to Kevin Feige last week on [“The Avengers”] set and he said, ‘Oh no, we haven’t got anyone yet. We’re thinking about people,’” Hiddleston recalled. “I think [Kirk’s] name is definitely in the hat, but I don’t think anything is solid.”

So when do they plan on shooting the sequel?

“I think probably next spring is the idea because the release date is locked down,” he said, adding that the storyline for the film will still likely pick-up from where “The Avengers” leaves off.

Speaking of which, given what we know about Loki’s shenanigans in the ensemble film, we asked Hiddleston how different the Asgardian prince will be from who he was in “Thor” to who he becomes in “Thor 2.”

“In ‘The Avengers’ he’s really dark and kind of sociopathic, or maybe even psychopathic is the word, in a deluded way,” he explained. “Obviously I haven’t let go of the spiritual damage at the heart of him, it still comes from that lost place, but he’s just incredibly nasty. I think that probably in ‘Thor 2’ his previous actions will, he’ll have to take responsibility for what he’s done.”

“The great thing about Loki is there is potential in him for greatness and awfulness, for great heroism and great villainy,” Hiddleston continued. “There are still, even within ‘The Avengers,’ there are moments where you see within Loki a glimmer of hope and that possibility of redemption.”

He went on to say that the grey area in the degree of Loki’s villainy makes the acting a lot more fun.

“It makes it fun to play and it makes it fun for the audience,” he said. “Nobody is black and white, there are shades of grey in all of us. We all have potential for greatness and we all have flaws. I for one am championing the redemption,” he added hopefully, along with a wish for a future Thor and Loki action scene: “This isn’t definitely going to happen, but I think there would be nothing more awesome than seeing Loki and Thor fight somebody side by side.”

The “Thor” Blu-ray hits shelves on September 13, 2011.

Cabin in the Woods Has a Release Date

The Cabin in the Woods is a little movie that’s meant to pack some scares, but the real horror is how long it’s been on the shelf. Co-written by Joss Whedon and starring Chris Hemsworth, the movie began filming in March 2009, but financial woes at MGM and a 3D post-conversion contributed to continual missed release dates. Now, Lionsgate has come to the horror comedy’s aid and slotted the movie for an April 13, 2012 release date, more than three years after it began production. If there’s any upside to the long delay, it’s that both Whedon and Hemsworth have seen their profiles lifted significantly in the interim thanks to Marvel — in fact, the Whedon-directed, Hemsworth-starring superhero crossover The Avengers will come out just three weeks after Cabin, on May 4. At least it should simplify their promotional duties!

Has a Teaser Trailer Been Shot for “The Avengers”?

Director Joss Whedon and his band of heroes, including Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) , Mark Ruffalo (The Hulk), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) and Clark Gregg (Phil Coulson) will not be going into production on Marvel Studios‘ forthcoming team-up film, The Avengers until April.

Now, reports claim that Marvel has already cut a secret teaser trailer for the movie, which could be seen this summer before Thor or Captain America: The First Avenger. AICN reports that Loki (Tom Hiddleston) is featured in that teaser trailer, and LatinoReview reaffirms that Loki will return in “The Avengers” as the main villain, and adds that he will use the “cosmic cube” from Captain America: The First Avenger to summon The Skrulls to invade Earth and battle The Avengers.

Although these reports are plausible, and the info is from reliable folks, all of this should probably be considered rumor for now. If it is all true, what do you think? Let me know in the comments.

The Avengers is slated to hit theaters on May 4th, 2012. (Source)

Snow White and the Huntsman News

Universal has named the last of the dwarfs in the studio’s upcoming Snow White and the Huntsman.

Check out the teeny tiny characters, all of whom have been named after Roman leaders;

Ian McShane (ring leader Caesar), Bob Hoskins (blind Constantine), Toby Jones (timid Claudius), Stephen Graham (angry Nero), Eddie Izzard (big Tiberius), Ray Winstone (Trajan, twin of Hadrian) Eddie Marsan (Hadrian) and the latest and last addition Nick Frost (young Gus).

The Huntsman will be played by Chris Hemsworth, Kristen Stewart is Snow White and Charlize Theron the Evil Queen.

With a high-profile cast and the new take on the fairytale with the inclusion of the Huntsman, we’re expecting big things. Producer, Joe Roth has described the Huntsman’s role as a “Nondescript bounty hunter… who captures runaway girls, who are all fleeing the kingdom because of the queen.” Roth is no stranger to classic fairytales after producing Alice in Wonderland in 2010.

There are talks of this being the first of a trilogy, but we’ll go easy on them as the first is only in pre-production stages.

Thor 2 will be scripted by Don Payne

Production on Thor 2 is pushing ahead after the announcement of its 2013 release date – the godly sequel has just landed a writer in the form of Don Payne.

Payne has worked on a Marvel property before, having been part of a conclave of writers on Fantastic Four sequel Rise Of The Silver Surfer.

He was also responsible for the not-so-super, horribly unfunny Uma Thurman ‘comedy’ My Super Ex-Girlfriend.

Hopefully he’s learnt from the mistakes of those earlier wash-outs and will be able to deliver a decent follow-up to this year’s surprisingly solid Thor.

The next announcement for Thor 2 should be a list of contenders for the director’s chair – Kenneth Branagh, who helmed the first film, won’t be returning for the sequel.

Let the Darren Aronofsky rumours commence…

Thor 2 opens 26 July 2013.

Who do you fancy for Thor 2’s directing chair?

Chris Hemsworth Gets Second Starring Vehicle

After the success of “Thor,” it’s not too much of a surprise that Chris Hemsworth is lining up future projects. His newest, “Shadow Runner,” was just acquired by Sony Pictures according to Deadline, and has lined up several producers as well. Hemsworth’s character will lead an elite team of operatives who will take on impossible tasks, the website reports. First, though, Hemsworth will be starring in “Snow White and the Huntsman.”
